For a long time I have felt that what marks a country as more advanced than another is the quality of life of it's citizens. Are they healthy? Are they happy? Is their more to their life than stress and work?
I've believed for awhile that nations with universal health insurance are a step ahead of us - just like how other countries beat us to universal sufferage, the abolition of slavery, and marriage rights for all citizens.
There's a great article in the NYTimes today about the growing demographic of the uninsured middle class. It touched a nerve with me - Feb 1 was the first time in 2 years that I've had insurance. Being a recent college graduate there was no way I could afford my own policy. My family are stiff-jawed conservitives, spoon fed on the idea that universal insurance will make their own health care quality go down...and even with one of their own without insurance & trying to make due (there were 3 times that my mom, and RN, brought skin glue home from the OR instead of my paying for stitches at the ER. I'm very accident prone.). How low will our country have to go before we can take this step forward?
