Those who know me well know certain things about me - I love pickles. Purple is my favorite color. I love Harry Potter more than any woman in her 20's really should - akin to that, I love Dumbledore. They also know that many of my personal friends are gay & I'm a huge advocate for gay rights.
But then why do I have such mixed feelings about the recent revelation that Dumbledore is gay? It's not like I never thought it before...there were certainly times that I wondered if he was "part of the family" - my friends and I certainly joked across more than one bottle of wine about why he REALLY kept Snape around. But that's what it was, a joke. We were all hard-core fans that knew it didn't matter who the D-man was getting down with...or IF.
I certainly am not against gay figures in children's lit - and commend it in fact - but something about this post-print reveal is bothering me. Like Rowling had to quarterback-sneak it in...make millions around the world love and revere him and then *oop* he's gay! GASP! And now fans everywhere are combing the texts to either support the claim or refute it to prove that Rowling is making it up. (and while I hate to admit it, a little piece of me wonders if she is...I'd hate to think she'd rehash one of her characters like that! Would she....?)
All that matters to me: I cried when he died, I cried at his funeral. I think I wept more honestly in my bed at 3 AM as the white coffin enclosed Dumbledore than I did at the public wake of some of my own family. I was offended when Voldemort desecrated his grave.
Does it matter if he was gay? HELL NO! Just like it does matter if my friends are gay - his sexual preferences were not central to who he was. It's certainly part of him, but it didn't define him & I'd rather not have a controversy be how he is remembered. I miss all the characters from the series, and am sad I'll never be able to discover them again...
I guess my problem isn't that Dumbledore is gay, but the chance that the most lasting impression about him might be that, and not how great of a character he is. I don't care if he's gay, straight, bi, trans, purple, or sexually ambiguous! I don't want him to be remembered as a scandal...I love him too much for that.

Fox & Friends
It's always an experience when I head home to Pittstown & visit my family - I always seem to pick up some local color or re-experience something and see it in a new light.
This weekend, it was Fox!
I had the great fortune of watching TV with different members of my family over the course of this weekend, and it seemed no matter the time of day, they were watching Fox! I got to listen to opinionated baseball commentators, evening news broadcasts, and the VERY best: Fox & Friends.
So I watched with horror at Fox's attempt to emulate the Today show, and as soon as I opened my sarcastic little pie hole I was told to shut up, because people in my family don't make fun of other people (this would be funnier if you knew my family).
And what did they talk about in the 20 minutes I tried to soak it all in?
Come on - you know this one!
BINGO! Liberal Bias (OOOoooo) (I would also have accepted "spin media")
So - this is my thought. I watch network news (to a point), and I don't EVER hear them talk about right-wing bias. I also listen to REAL liberal media, & they talk about how network media has a Conservative Bias ALL THE TIME. The difference? Liberal media is independently produced and distributed and isn't being pipped directly into every home in America...it has to be sought out.
I think that both sides need to shut up. Mainstream, TRUE mainstream media - the regular networks - are playing for ratings. Fox & the true liberal media have agendas. It's just that Fox has a bigger budget, more resources, and is a tool of the devil.
(That last part would be a joke - for all you literal people out there w/ no sense of gosh-darn humor)

Wow...Just, Wow
I know I'm late on this, and that it's been so long since I posted that you thought I was in a coma; but I couldn't just let this one slide by.
Ann Coulter - she continues to blow my mind in that "if I met her in a back ally, would I kill my pacifism & punch her lights out" kind of way.
Here's a quote from her recent interview to promote her new book:
1. If it's single women that are voting so stupidly, how are they soccer moms?
2. Hillary is leading in the male demographic, not female, and she's leading in the polls
3. This is a classic Republican voting tactic - take away the rights of a demographic to make it seem as if a red candidate won the popular vote. It's unlikely that you'd ever see something like this for such a large chunk of society in the current socio-political climate...but you rarely hear some moron talk about that tactic so blatantly.
I'm just so tired of the republican party bashing the intelligence and merit of the dem/progressive populace instead of spinning a well thought out argument. You can insult me all you want & all I'll think is that your a jerk...if you present an argument that is rational and I can follow, you might actually affect my opinion.....I'm just sayin'...

"If we took away women's right to vote, we'd never have to worry about another Democrat president. It's kind of a pipe dream, it's a personal fantasy of mine, but I don't think it's going to happen. And it is a good way of making the point that women are voting so stupidly, at least single women.
It also makes the point, it is kind of embarrassing, the Democratic Party ought to be hanging its head in shame, that it has so much difficulty getting men to vote for it. I mean, you do see it’s the party of women and 'We’ll pay for health care and tuition and day care -- and here, what else can we give you, soccer moms?'"
Hmmmm - a few weird things here:1. If it's single women that are voting so stupidly, how are they soccer moms?
2. Hillary is leading in the male demographic, not female, and she's leading in the polls
